Huayan Temple is located on Dalaoshan Mountain in Huayan Township, Jiulongpo District. It is named after Huayan Cave, which lies to the south of the temple. The exact date of its initial construction is unknown. It was expanded during the reigns of Emperor Kangxi, Emperor Daoguang, and Emperor Tongzhi of the Qing Dynasty. The Huayan Temple is situated on a cliff hundreds of feet high, shaped like a scepter. The temple grounds are lush with pine and bamboo trees, creating a secluded and tranquil atmosphere. It boasts eight scenic spots, including “Heavenly Pool Moonlit Night” and “Ten Thousand Ridges Pine Waves.” Huayan Temple is divided into a main temple and a smaller temple. The main temple is a traditional courtyard-style brick and wood structure complex, consisting of three main halls: the Mahavira Hall, the Ancestral Master Shengke Hall, and the Guanyin Hall. To the left of the temple is the Reception Hall. The wooden reliefs of the sixteen Arhats in the Mahavira Hall are rare in temples. The temple also houses a collection of Indian jade Buddhas, bronze, jade, stone, wood, and clay sculptures, and a model of a large golden pagoda. The smaller temple, Huayan Cave, faces the main temple across the lake and is the ancestral temple of Huayan Temple.
