Located on Biandan Mountain in Zhenning County in the south-west of Guizhou Province, Shitou Village (or “Stone Village”) is made up of dwellings built entirely from stone. Under trees and in the bamboo forests surrounding the village you can find stone benches, stone chairs and stone tables, while the roads through the village are paved entirely with stone. Shitou is also known as the village of wax-dyeing, with most of the local women engaged in producing fabrics using traditional methods of wax-resist dyeing, turning them into everything from clothes for newborn babies to marital sheets for newlyweds. As a result, the village has come to be regarded as a “wax-dyeing world”.
