    Huayan Temple

    Huayan Temple is located on Dalaoshan Mountain in Huayan Township, Jiulongpo District. It is named after Huayan Cave, which lies to the south of the temple. The exact date of its initial construction is unknown. It was expanded during the reigns of Emperor Kangxi, Emperor Daoguang, and Emperor Tongzhi of the Qing Dynasty.The Huayan Temple is situated on a cliff hundreds of feet high, shaped like a scepter. The temple grounds are lush with pine and bamboo trees, creating a secluded and tranquil atmosphere. It boasts eight scenic spots, including “Heavenly Pool Moonlit Night” and “Ten Thousand Ridges Pine Waves.” Huayan Temple is divided into a main temple and a smaller temple. The main temple is a traditional courtyard-style brick and wood structure complex, consisting of three main halls: the Mahavira Hall, the Ancestral Master Shengke Hall, and the Guanyin Hall. To the left of the temple is the Reception Hall. The wooden reliefs of the sixteen Arhats in the Mahavira Hall are rare in temples. The temple also houses a collection of Indian jade Buddhas, bronze, jade, stone, wood, and clay sculptures, and a model of a large golden pagoda. The smaller temple, Huayan Cave, faces the main temple across the lake and is the ancestral temple of Huayan Temple.

    The Goddess (Shennv) Peak is also called the Sunset Watching (Wangxia) Peak or the Beauty (Meiren) Peak. It is one of the twelve peaks of Mount Wu, located on the northern bank of the Great River of Gorge Wu, about 15 kilometers east of the county town of Mount Wu. The twelve peaks of Mount Wu all have their own characteristics. The Goddess Peak is the known of them for its supreme beauty. On the northern bank of the River of Gorge Wu, a giant rock pillar rises above the clouds surrounding the green mountain. Since the peak looks like a charming and delicate maiden, it is named the Goddess Peak. According to ancient myths, the Goddess Peak is the incarnation of Princess Yao. The youngest daughter of the Queen Mother of the West, the princess once helped the Great Yu of Xia to open up river canals and redirect flooding water.
