Xi’an Museum is a modern comprehensive museum built around the historic site of Jianfu Temple from the Tang Dynasty and its iconic structure, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda. It integrates cultural relic preservation, academic research, exhibition displays, public education, and garden leisure activities. The museum’s core area occupies the original site of Jianfu Temple, a royal monastery during the Tang Dynasty, with the well-preserved Small Wild Goose Pagoda serving as its distinctive landmark and spiritual center. The temple ruins and pagoda not only form the foundation of Xi’an Museum but also serve as its key outdoor historical exhibition area and visitor highlight. The main museum building, located north of the ancient temple site, creates a unique cultural space where “museum, pagoda, temple, and garden” harmoniously coexist, vividly showcasing Xi’an’s historical continuity from ancient times to the present. Xi’an Museum officially opened to the public on May 18, 2007. Established to comprehensively showcase the glorious history and brilliant culture of Xi’an (ancient Chang’an) as the capital of thirteen dynasties, it filled the gap of lacking a comprehensive urban history museum in Xi’an. Collection highlights: The museum houses approx. 130,000 precious artifacts from various historical periods of Xi’an, including over 10,000 nationally classified Grade III or above cultural relics. The collection spans from prehistoric times to the Ming and Qing dynasties, with particular emphasis on artifacts from the golden ages of the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang dynasties. Featured items include bronze ware, jade pieces, gold and silver objects, ceramics, murals, stone steles with epitaphs, and Buddhist statues, systematically showcasing the political, economic, cultural, social life, and foreign exchanges of ancient Chang’an. Main exhibition: The permanent exhibition “Ancient Capital Xi’an” traces the city’s development history through precious artifacts, models, charts, and multimedia displays. It chronologically presents Xi’an’s evolution and achievements as both a capital city (Zhou’s Fenghao, Qin’s Xianyang, Han’s Chang’an, Sui-Tang’s Chang’an) and a prefectural city (Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties). Unique setting: The museum’s standout feature is its environment. Visitors can not only explore modern exhibition halls but also stroll through the expansive heritage park, which includes the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, the ancient architectural complex of Jianfu Temple (featuring structures like the Ming Dynasty bell tower housing a Jin Dynasty ancient bell), an ancient stone carving art exhibition area, and garden views. Here, they can immerse themselves in the charm of this thousand-year-old capital right at the historical site. The renowned “Morning Bell at Wild Goose Pagoda” view adds to its fame. World heritage site: As one of the key heritage sites in the “Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang’an-Tianshan Corridor” UNESCO World Heritage, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and its surrounding Jianfu Temple historic area represent the core cultural value of Xi’an Museum. Function and positioning: The museum serves not only as a vital center for cultural relic collection, research, and exhibition, but also as an urban cultural park where citizens can relax and immerse themselves in history. This hundred-year courtyard in the center of Xi’an is a brick-and-wood structure courtyard that began construction at the end of the Ming dynasty. It was not until the Emperor Qianlong’s reign during the Qing Dynasty that the main project was completed. The entire construction process took more than one hundred years. Nowadays, this ancient courtyard has been opened to tourists. The wood carvings and brick sculptures in the courtyard are exquisite and delicately carved. Inside the courtyard, you can also choose to watch a unique Shaanxi shadow puppet show and listen to authentic local dialects for a while.

Da Ci’en Temple is located at the southern end of Yanta Road in the southern suburbs of Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province. It is a symbolic building of Chang’an in the Tang Dynasty. Da Ci’en Temple was first built in the Sui Dynasty and was originally named “Wulou Temple”. In the 22nd year of Tang Zhenguan (AD 648), Prince Li Zhi expanded the temple in memory of his biological mother, Empress Wende, and renamed it “Da Ci’en Temple”. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda was first built in the third year of Yonghui in the Tang Dynasty (AD 652). The Big Wild Goose Pagoda was a building in the Tang Dynasty. It had five floors when it was first built. The tower base is a square brick platform. There are brick arches on all sides of each floor, and there are wooden stairs leading to the top floor in the tower. Now it is a 7-story brick pagoda in the style of imitation wood pavilion built in the Ming Dynasty. The body of the tower is an empty brick tube with a height of 64 meters. The momentum is magnificent, and it is clear at a glance. A large number of scriptures and translated Buddhist scriptures brought back by Master Xuanzang were preserved here. On March 4, 1961, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda was announced by the State Council as the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units. It was included in the “World Heritage List” by UNESCO in 2014.

The Famen Cultural Scenic Area, located approx. 10 km north of Fufeng County in Baoji City, was first built during the late Eastern Han Dynasty. This Tang Dynasty “imperial temple” became a nationally revered Buddhist sanctuary as it enshrines the supreme Buddhist relic – the finger bone sarira of Sakyamuni Buddha. The underground palace houses three “shadow relics” (jade replicas crafted to protect the true relics), the treasure hall displays artifacts offered by the Tang Dynasty imperial family, while the sacred Buddha’s finger relic (true body) is enshrined in the Heshili Pagoda on the eastern side of the cultural area. If you enter the attraction from the Mountain Gate Plaza on the western side of the cultural area, you’ll be greeted by the approx. 1 km-long Buddha Light Avenue. Flanked by ten towering golden Bodhisattva statues, this grand boulevard leads eastward to the He Shi Pagoda at its terminus. Sightseeing vehicles are available along the avenue. The Buddha’s finger bone relic is only displayed to the public on the 1st and 15th days of the lunar month, weekends, and major holidays. To the southwest of the cultural scenic area lies the Famen Temple and its treasure museum. Beneath the Zhen Shen Pagoda within the temple complex is the underground palace where the “Buddha’s finger relic” was discovered. Today, visitors can view three replica relics up close in the palace. After exploring the underground palace, you can wander through the serene temple grounds, which feature typical Tang Dynasty-style structures including the bell and drum towers, the Great Buddha Hall, and a liberation pond. The Treasure Hall houses hundreds of precious artifacts. In the adjacent Treasure Hall (also known as the museum), you’ll find exquisite artifacts unearthed from the underground palace. Marvel at hundreds of precious Buddhist offerings from the Tang imperial family – each piece is truly astonishing. Highlights include the eight-layered reliquary for housing Buddhist relics, the twelve-ringed monk’s staff, pure gold pagodas, white marble spirit altars, secret-color porcelain, and the emperor’s personal tea set. Some treasures are crafted from solid gold, while others showcase lost craftsmanship techniques, reflecting the immense wealth of the Tang Empire.
